Previously released in 2013 as CD only in an album by monolog, a project by multi-instrumentalist Yuki Kanesaka. Starting off with an ode to Lorwell's recognizable bassline followed by Patrice singing the unforgettable hook throughout. All live instruments, played and produced by Yuki Kanesaka a.k.a. monolog. The Shapeshifters teases the deluxe edition of their 2022 studio album 'Let Loose' with two remixes from Sophie Lloyd and Aeroplane. The long-awaited release on Glitterbox saw Simon Marlin work with luminaries from the world of disco, house and soul like Billy Porter, Joss Stone, Kimberly Davis and Teni Tinks, and the album succeeded in pushing The Shapeshifters sonic aesthetic, retaining the brassy, string flourishes and colourful instrumentation that we have come to expect. A year later, 'Let Loose: Deluxe' bolsters the original LP with remixes from fellow Glitterbox mainstays. First up, Belgian disco producer Aeroplane remixes 'Giving Me Something Better' featuring Obi Franky, mixing rhythmic synth goodness into the funk-laden OG. Next, Brighton-based soul house expert Sophie Lloyd remixes Simon's Talking Heads cover 'Slippery People', upping the tempo for the late disco nights on the light-up dancefloor. French maestro Art Of Tones collaborates with one of house music's most celebrated artists Inaya Day for an unforgettable Glitterbox release, 'Give My Love'. A moniker of longstanding producer Ludovic Llorca, Art Of Tones was created in the noughties as an outlet for his edgier house and disco work, leading to celebrated releases including certified house anthem 'The Rainbow Song' and his first Art Of Tones album 'Unbalanced' in 2018. For this latest release, Ludovic enlists American songwriter Inaya Day, the hitmaker known for seminal house classics including Mousse T.'s 'Horny', Harry Romero's 'Rise Up' and Prince cover 'Nasty Girl'. From the very start, 'Give My Love' is dripping in the modern sound of disco these two helped establish, with Inaya's powerful vocal and songwriting prowess supported by Art Of Tones' expert instrumentation. Just in time for the beginning of autumn and with it the legitimation to more blue notes, David Bay is back with his first sad banger on Zissou Records. 'dancing on the edge' may be his fastest track yet, but it also has a slow and more melancholic vibe to it. With bittersweet lyrics that deliberately leave room for interpretation, David subtly alludes to the excessive speed in our society and the many victims it claims. Soft high-pitch vocals, lush pads, classy strings and a almost indiesque foundation of bass, guitar and drums make this a very unique piece of music, that works for both: Simply to escape our relentlessly rotating minds for a brief moment or to find resonance with the deeper meaning of it. 'dancing on the edge' is following up to David Bay's latest singles 'strangers', '1999' and his 'Zissou Edits Best EP' that were supported by lots of great artist such as Solomun, SG Lewis, Lost Frequencies, Don Diablo and many more. If you liked the early Crazy P, the charm of Folamour or the recent ANOTR - you will enjoy this record.

The long-awaited 2022 release saw Simon Marlin work with luminaries from the world of disco, house and soul like Billy Porter, Joss Stone, Kimberly Davis and Teni Tinks, and the album succeeded in pushing The Shapeshifters sonic aesthetic, retaining the brassy, string flourishes and colourful instrumentation that we have come to expect. Eli Escobar returns for his 9th full length LP. While his last few projects found him exploring downtempo beats, EBM and ambient influences, this latest offering of Eli's studio craftsmanship marks a return to the sound of his early releases like Up All Night and Happiness. Warm samples expertly woven into classic drum machine rhythms and searing synth lines, The Beach Album takes listeners on a journey through golden era hip hop beats, feel-good NY-styled house grooves into sweaty techno bangers. Similar to Eli's DJ sets, the 16 track long player has something for everyone. Created during the uncertainty of the pandemic when as Eli put it, "It didn't feel like the right time to release dance music," The Beach album celebrates the return of NY nightlife and optimism for the future.

TTeo is the pseudonym of Matteo Capreoli - a half German, half Italian singer, songwriter, multi-instrumentalist and producer with a deep musical heritage. Fernando Antonio Capreoli, his father, left Salento in southern Italy for Germany in 1970, before forming disco-funk-rock outfit Lovexpress, made up of mainly Italian and Scandinavian musicians, playing drums in the band and touring Norway, Sweden and Denmark from 1974 to 1979. TTeo himself signed to Sonar Kollektiv in 2020, releasing the Salento EP, named after the place of his father's birth. More recently, though, he was serendipitously handed a batch of cassettes by his dad of some of Lovexpress' live shows from the late 1970s. TTeo was deeply impressed by the quality of the music and got his father to digitise them immediately! These recordings form the basis of, and the inspiration for, his latest LP - Lovexpress 77, and are the only known recordings of the band who never quite made it into the studio to lay down an album. The LP is a unique combination of songs that sample, rework and are inspired by the Lovexpress band and TTeo's southern Italian roots. Tracks like Follow Me, Samba and the eponymous Lovexpress itself draw heavily on samples from the band's original live recordings, often with Matteo over-laying new sounds and multiple instrumentation to complement and enhance them. On Follow Me and Samba he adds his own voice into the mix and allows guests to get involved too, with vocalist Kristine Bogan adding to the former and producer Owen Ross contributing Fender Rhodes to the latter. Elsewhere, his father's original conga playing is sampled on the sultry Arzu, with TTeo adding his own piano parts, recorded on his iPhone, and on Lovexpress - the first track he made from sampling the band's work - it's the drums that take centre stage, alongside added guitar from Swedish-Estonian musician, Raul Ojamaa. In fact, it's the drums that are central to this very special album in that TTeo plays his father's original kit that was used in the 1970's recordings. This often means that Matteo finds himself jamming with his father, both playing the same drum kit, on many of the songs. This is particularly evident on Follow Me, and no doubt helps give it its very spiritual and uplifting feel. Other tracks on the album, such as the haunting yet foot friendly 42H, draw on the influences of TTeo's roots and the Lovexpress band rather than sampling the band themselves. They are no less powerful though, with songs like Pantera, for example, which is inspired by how freely the band expressed themselves being a particular highlight. Sometimes is a track that was made towards the end of the process with Italian vocalist Dalila Cavalera, who herself was inspired by listening to the Lovexpress recordings. The track combines traditional Italian Pizzica rhythms with a modern club groove to great effect! Figli Delle Stelle is a homage to one of Matteo's favourite vocalists from the 1970s, Alan Sorrenti. As he often does with Lovexpress, TTeo takes the guts of Sorrenti's original song and makes it his own, whilst maintaining that very important sense of humour. Notably, Mi Fa Sofrire is the only song on the album that TTeo wrote from scratch. The title translates to You Make Me Suffer and is a lament on a love which is often uplifting, joyous and sweet, but can often be quite the opposite. Again, this is delivered with much humour and tongue very much in cheek. And finally, album closer, A Bronx Tale, is inspired both by DeNiro's directorial debut about the relationships between Afro and Italian Americans and John Gennari's celebrated book on the subject, Flavor and Soul. They serve as a reference to the way the band's diversity enabled them to embrace their differences and play together so successfully, for so many years. By sampling, re-working and re-imagining the band's source material in this very unique way, TTeo is bringing his father's original club sounds to a whole new audience. Matteo is now back living in his family's home town of Salento once again and sees this project as "closing a circle" both musically and personally. Although he may be opening a new one if rumours of getting the Lovexpress band back together and recording that missing studio album come to fruition! Only time will tell.
New Zealand disco-boogie outfit Flamingo Pier plant some Brooklyn roots with their fresh new 'Beneath the Neon EP' on Razor-N-Tape. Known for parties in East London and their massive hometown festival, as well as previous releases on Soundway, the Kiwi collective deliver a trio of new songs that solidify and expand their signature danceable blue-eyed indie-soul sound. Lead off single How 2 Feel shows a clubbier side of the band, with a pulsating house rhythm track and layers of angular synth stabs, vibey horn lines, and vocal chants. Beneath the Neon and Remedy are more familiar Flamingo Pier territory, upbeat indie disco anthems that boast incendiary vocal hooks, funky guitar work, and crisp production by Luke Walker. Rounding out the EP are remixes by Chicago house legend Glenn Underground, and RNT co-head JKriv, whose mix features a guest appearance by Afro-boogie royalty Steve Monite. Out on Sept 2nd, and oozing with hazy sun, Beneath the Neon is the perfect soundtrack to soak up the dog days of summer.

We are very excited to welcome yet another new talent to Dirt Crew Recordings! J. Peacock is a Blackpool born artist, raised on Northern Soul and nurtured in the Manchester music scene. In 2015, he started making and releasing techno under the moniker Joel John. More recently, he has turned his focus closer to home, inspired by uplifting house music produced by friends, and sampling his favourite records played by his dad over the years. Last year he released a first collab track with Laurence Guy on Shall Not Fade. J.Peacock's The Praying Kind EP marks a new musical chapter: combining nostalgia and dance floor energy. In his own words: The goal was to just have fun, experimenting with a new way of making music to what Ive been doing previously. Taking influence from artists I used to listen to constantly like Soundstream, Cottam, Boo Williams as well as artists close to me like Harry Wolfman and Laurence Guy. This record is about creating something that gives me flashbacks to my dad playing tunes in his flat. The opener Philly Track is a true original House tune reminiscent of those classic records in the early 90s, think of the Paris French wave sounds or New York style cut up and filtered good times dance floor hitters. Silk Road starts out as a tribal groover with some great vocal sampling going on, this one is much more situated in the Bass and UK style areas of House Music. Again with a big touch of Soul and deepness all around. Then on to the breaks laden Midnight Standard. Here J. Peacock shows us another side of his musical spectrum, much more in the regions of a Harry Wolfman production even with touches of progressive breaks. A really great dark and smoke filled club tune! Closing out with the title track The Praying Kind he opens up all filters here and brings us a great banger of a track. Slowly building towards that big middle break to unleash a real dance floor monster. This one should tear it up anywhere! Enjoy this lovely soulful, diverse House EP by J. Peacock! Surely a great start to his new project! All tracks mastered by Salz Mastering in Cologne. Music Written & Produced by J. Peacock. Photography by J. Peacock & Art by Break 3000.

Setting out to create a future Balearic anthem while doffing a cap to street soul and synth-heavy Italo-disco B-sides of the early 1980s, Orbs of Light's debut single, 'Billion Days' lands on Leng after a tip-off from Mind Fair duo Dean Meredith and Ben Shenton, who booked the duo to play live at their Rotation festival last summer. Orbs of Light's Baz Bradley and A Girl Called Kate have been friends for decades and have collaborated musically in the past, though it was only a couple of years ago that they dreamed up this project. It was first trialed via a 2021 remix for Andres y Xavi on Hollis Recordings ('Perfect Timing') on which Kate added new vocals to Bradley's interpretation of the track. Since then, regular recording sessions have taken place, with the duo first crafting tight instrumental tracks before – in Bradley's words – "dream up the best songs we can" with "melodies that will hopefully stay in your head all day". It would be fair to say that they've achieved that goal on 'Billion Days', a hooky and addictive affair whose vocal hooks and strong chorus could well inspire Balearic sing-alongs in the months ahead. Their original mix (B1 on the vinyl version of the EP, track 2 on the digital EP) is joyous, cheery and kaleidoscopic, with steel pan style melodies, bouncy synth stabs, jaunty lead lines and Kate's wonderful lead vocal riding a shuffling, post street soul beat and a bubbly bassline. The accompanying remix package is naturally very strong too. San Francisco crew 40 Thieves, fresh from dropping a killer single of their own on Leng ('The Gift', with disco legends Gary Davis and Cinnamon Jones), step up first with a take that stretches out and builds on Orbs of Light's original mix – think wobbly nu-disco synth bass, fresh flute sounds, dubbed-out vocal snippets and a locked-in groove that's just perfect for sun-soaked alfresco dancing. Fittingly, the second and final revision comes from Mind Fair, whose email to Leng HQ about Orbs of Light got the ball rolling. Opting for a rubbery, body-popping beat inspired by vintage electro, they deliver a joyful, effects-laden Balearic dancefloor 'Dub Mix' that somehow makes a genuinely life-affirming record even more loved-up and saucer-eyed – despite the presence of only a fraction of Kate's addictive lead vocal.
Inspired by the origins of hip hop along with disco, jazz & blues, the music from the 70's and 80's have played a big part in the creation of Saison's sound. The duo pay homage to some of their influences with this EP for Pleased As Punch. Strictly for the party and dancers, enjoy loud and with friends.
'strangers' is a tune about the unifying force behind music played out loud to a group of good people. Nightlife can create places and moments that need no words. It can be a safe space to connect with others and yourself on a very different level. In the streets it feels weird to simply smile at someone but when you're dancing on the same floor, to the same music - it sometimes suddenly gets very easy. This is the follow up to David Bay's latest single '1999' that received heaps of support by the biggest names, such as Purple Disco Machine, Jamie Jones, Diplo,... and even a retro-flavoured remix by Frankfurt's Lauer. 'strangers' is featuring a trumpet-solo, just like last falls 'Edits Best'-banger 'saudade' - Next to that it brings lush vocals contrasted by a straight-forward House-beat and a demanding bassline to the table. This tune sounds exactly like what it is about: The upsides of going out and the connecting power of music. Don't miss out on yet another sun-drenched release on Zissou Records.
Cacao Records is proud to present the highly anticipated release by the talented artist Ben Gomori, titled "A Certain Vintage." This captivating EP features two incredible tracks that will transport you on a musical journey like no other. With its blend of vibrant rhythms, Afro-Cuban vocals, and infectious energy, this release is set to make waves this summer. The first track, "Chin Chin Boom," is a peak house anthem that draws inspiration from Afro-Caribbean influences. Featuring captivating vocals and percussion elements from Cuba, this track exudes a remarkable energy that is hard to resist. Its pulsating beats and irresistible grooves create an atmosphere that is both electrifying and euphoric. Ben Gomori effortlessly weaves together a powerful fusion of diverse musical elements in this energetic masterpiece. On the flip side, we have "Emotional Weather," a track that delves into a deeper and more introspective realm. Blending percussions that maintain an infectious groove, emotional piano chords, and a throbbing bassline synth, this piece captures the essence of both sunset bliss and the after-party euphoria. Its captivating melodies and evocative atmosphere take listeners on a sonic adventure, provoking a range of emotions and leaving a lasting impression. "Emotional Weather" is a testament to Ben Gomori's ability to create music that resonates deeply with the listener, evoking vivid imagery and connecting on a profound level. "A Certain Vintage" showcases Ben Gomori's exceptional talent as a producer and his unique ability to craft music that transcends genres. This release is a testament to the innovative and forward-thinking sound that Cacao Records continues to champion.
The original single from Escape From New York finally gets an official reissue. Originally released in 1983 'Save Our Love' was released a year before 'Fire in My Heart' and sets out their highly effective fusion of New Wave, Disco, Italo and Post Punk. Featuring Jaki Graham and D.C Lee on backing vocals, the 12" also includes an instrumental mix and cult classic 'Slow Beat' (Dance Mix). Escape From New York were short lived and disbanded in 1984 following the release of 'Fire in My Heart', ultimately buckling under the pressure of commercial expectations for their innovative brand of pop music. Fast forward to 2023 and history has been kind and these singles are now regarded as being pioneering classics.
Taking things into straight up, exuberant Afro Disco territory, the fast rising Alan Dixon nudges Gyedu-Blay Ambolley's 1975, groove heavy 'High Life' killer into potential summer anthem territory, with classy drum additions, classic disco 12" arrangement, and judicious use of the original hooks.
Esteemed scribe, proper DJ, and discreetly deft twiddler Bill Brewster, drops the latest instalment in his 'After Dark' series, for Late Night Tales. A throbbing, louche and leisurely affair, groove is very much at the heart of this freestyle selection, a vibe which Bill describes as "a basement, a red light and a sound system. Or, as the Beastie's once rapped, slow and low, that is the tempo". There's Hawaiian drum machine bossa balearica from Island Band, percussive afro post punk from Czech jazz singer Jana Koubkova, and breathy-bubbling-dubwise-slap-bass-soul from Debbe & The Code. There's also sultry deep house mood music from Lanowa, infectious bouncy jazz funk breaks from Canada High, and Nail's life affirming re-edit of singer songwriter Gilbert O Sullivan's electro pop gem 'So What'. Bill's own studio skills are present and correct too, featuring an undulating bassy version of country troubadour Jeb Loy Nichols, reworked along Alex Tepper under their Hotel Motel moniker, and a chugged-up squelchy disco take on Khruangbin, this time paired with Raj Gupta, as Mang Dynasty. Chock full of exclusives, tracks are either completely brand new, or available digitally for the first time, whilst others are wallet-rinsing rarities if purchased elsewhere. Whichever way you slice it though, every tune is a highlight, working equally well as standalone nuggets, or within Bill's fluidly cohesive mix. 01 Toe – 'Infinite Consciousness' 02 Island Band – 'Idle Hours' 03 Jana Koubková – 'Nijána' 04 Dan Wainwright – 'Come Home' 05 Jeb Loy Nichols – 'Don't Drop Me' (Hotel Motel Remix) 06 Nick Munday – 'Drum Lock' 07 Khruangbin – 'So We Won't Forget' (Mang Dynasty Forgotten Dub) 08 Matt Rhythm (or is artist Rhythm Plate?) – 'We Were Made To Be Artists' 09 Debbe & The Code – 'Code Of Love' 10 Lanowa – 'Burning Up' 11 Gilbert O Sullivan – 'So What' (Nail Edit) 12 Canada High – 'Le Chiffre' 13 Smashed Atoms And Backdoor Man – 'Hey Dreamer' 14 Patina – 'Arphicelago' 15 Fernando Pulichino – '1998' 16 IPG – 'Open Space' (Hot Toddy Mix) 17 Carl Finlow – 'Hyperkagome' 18 Rheinzand – 'Kills & Kisses' (Scorpio Twins Remix) 19 Chaz Jankel – 'Manon Manon' Whether he's taking the roof off a club with his unique selection of deep and tough house music, enchanting a backroom with a genre-bending set of disco, Balearic, rock and hip hop or playing chillout music in a bay in Croatia, Bill Brewster is the man for all occasions. In a former life, Bill was a punk rocker, a chef and also the co-editor of football magazine When Saturday Comes but has been a record nerd all of his life. He began DJing in the 1980s, but came into his own in the early 1990s, particularly during a two-year stint in New York running DMC's office, where nights at the Sound Factory and hanging out with Danny Tenaglia gave him the musical grounding you can still hear in his music today. Bill was also one of the founding residents at Fabric in London, a position he held for five years. There are few still playing regularly today that have his dedication, eclecticism and encyclopedic knowledge of music. His parallel life is as a writer, and with his long-term partner-in-crime Frank Broughton, they have written four books together, including the acclaimed 'Last Night A DJ Saved My Life' (latest edition published last July), 'How To DJ (Properly)' and 'The Record Players'. The pair are also behind the legendary DJhistory.com and their party, Low Life, has been running for nearly 30 years. He has been working in the industry's fringes for over 40 years including the running of various labels from Twisted UK and Forensic in the '90s to Disco Sucks and Anorak in the noughties. He is one of NTS radio's new residents for 2023 and his 'Low Life Loves You' show is available on the first Tuesday of every month. Occasionally Bill finds time to secrete himself away in a studio to make music or chop up edits. And when he's not doing any of that he has a family and a dog called Mavis to tend to.

Dicky Trisco is back with a pack of Disco dynamite thats set to blow up your DISCOTECA this summer! Discoteca was originally a synth-driven Disco beast released back in 2014 on Marseille label La Dame Noir. Fast-forward to 2023 and Dicky is unleashing a brand new Disco version. Its packed full of new live instrumental vibes. Its got a heavy dose of added Disco sleaze courtesy of vocals by NYC singer-DJ-party-starter Ria Bird. And then theres the Balearic keys that push this delicious track into dance floor heaven. As a DJ who travels around the globe in pursuit of top vibes, good times and great music, you would expect this release to have a truly international flavour. And that is just what you get! First up on the remix duties is Mexican Disco jefe Hotmood, who pumps and bumps the track into that peak time dance floor zone. He then adds a killer breakdown and soaks the whole affair in heavily percussive club energy. These Hotmood mixes are sure to satisfy the Disco & House heads out there and they come in both vox & dub versions. Chingon!!! Next we journey to NYC via Italia as DJ Harvey faves Synth & Soda hit the big New Wave Disco button with their typically cool and chic versions. Conjuring up memories of synthtastic pioneers Visage in full power, they blend that vibe with a truly psychedelic feel for those trippy moments in the discotheque. They also deliver two takes on the original - a Proto Mix and a Dub In The Field Mix. Last but by no means least the Original Version is included - which still drips in synthy Disco class as it pushes us into a dance floor bliss. Dig in and get down to the sounds of La Discotecaaaaaaaaaaa!
2023 saw the return of multi-talented Norwegian producerEspen Horneto Wah Wah 45s, after a 24 year hiatus. The man behind the label's very first release, the now seminalMagnetica, never lost his connection with the label and has remained very much part of the Wah Wah family, making a comeback this spring with his first solo material under his own name since that club classic from 1999. The gorgeous soul-jazz beauty, Bakeren, featuring the stunning vocals of Resonators' Faye Houston, quickly found a home onGilles Peterson's internationally renowned BBC Radio 6 show as well as that of Jazz FM legendRobbie Vincent,Bandcamp Weeklyand theFresh Finds JazzSpotify playlist. With its follow up,Bergen Sunrays, Espen has employed the talents of another sublime vocalist - this time rapper and singer Selim Mutic who is also, quite aptly, from the Norwegian's home town referenced in the song's title. The track was the first piece that Espen started working on in this new collection of songs, and what started as a rough sketch was soon picked up to be used as part of the Visit Bergen tourism campaign! The song's lyrics talk about loving their city for what it is - "raindrops, snowflakes, sunrays", all in one day! It's a melancholic and soulful love song to Bergen that incidentally also marks the first time that Mutic has written and performed a piece in English! Curious keys come courtesy ofEirik Blasternesalongside driving drums fromIvar Thormodsaeter, but it'sChris Holm's heavy bassline groove, itself inspired, in typical Espen Horne style, by an obscure choral Christian record from 1970, that really propels the track forward. And that groove is tweaked subtly and classily by German house music producersSession Victim, who here deliver the added bonus of a refined downtempo remix to make the track a very handy early doors floor filler. Bergen Sunrays is the second taster to be taken from the album,TheAnatomy of Serene Eloquence, due out later this year on Wah Wah 45s.
We are delighted to announce that July 2023 is the month in which you will finally be able to know the new Apparel Wax product: Apparel Wax Mini. The Mini catalogue (dedicated to 7-inch vinyl) fits into the narrative of our masked hero as a sort of prequel, as the 'Mini' vinyl represents the 'childhood' of Apparel Wax, his life before its music started to be heard around the world. Another novelty is that the first release is double. In fact, APLWAXMINI001 and 002 will drop on the same day, both containing two tracks, one on each side. With a physical product of different size, we have also adapted the graphic design of the project, as you'll notice looking at the record. A new adventure begins in the world of the masked artist who, this time, will tell another musical story created by the now famous anonymous collective of phenomenal artists behind the project. APLWAXMINI001 is composed of two tracks perfect for the summer period, both with a very marked essence of lightness and groovy, both ideal to bring back the carefree and cheerful musical soul at the base of the project since its origins. We're also back with Wax's characteristic gift kits, which from now on will be strictly green and recyclable. The record buyers will find included in the vinyl packaging a Special Biodegradable Plantable Paper containing non-GMO seeds, which germinates in contact with water and soil. They can give life to wildflowers, aromatic plants or vegetables.

RNT welcomes Amy Douglas to their ever-growing lineup of illustrious talent with a double A-side 7' of pulsating, Rough-N-Tumble NYC Disco. Known to the heads as a voice and pen behind Horse Meat Disco, Roisín Murphy, and as the face of HARD FEELINGS (her project with Hot Chip's Joe Goddard), Amy's distinctive vocal swagger and songwriting talent are on full display on this EP. Co-written with and produced by RNT co-honcho JKriv, both tracks are bass heavy instant earworms, and wickedly naughty party starters. Grab this pair of future modern disco classics, conceived by a pair of experienced dance-floor auteurs.
Following on from the successes of their first two LPs, "Kalba" and "Small Small", Isaac Birituro & The Rail Abandon return with the "Kontonbili EP". A collection of seven tracks that trace the traditional West African roots of their sound whilst adding their unique touch, largely courtesy of Isaac's xylophone, Sonny Johns' folky embellishments and the vocal prowess of powerful Ghanaian songstress Wiyaala. The lead single "Hado Deeli" roughly translates to "My Rival" and is a vibrant discussion between two rivals, one of whom is always making a fuss about anything and everything, even when things are all good! "Gargar", with its collaboration of xylophone, whistles, Wiyaala's effervescent vocals and relentless groove represents, quite literally, the band's "joining together" for this EP. In contrast, "I Know" sees Sonny Johns takes over lead vocal duties to lament the breakdown of a relationship accompanied by muted horns and Wiyaala's soothing backing vocals. "Nimmbalia" continues in a mellow and reassuring tone before emerging as one of the most uplifting and simultaneously fierce cuts on the EP! The traditional version of "Bawa" - the original take of which can be found on last year's "Small Small" LP - strips things back a little, before culminating in a battle of xylophone, whistles and choir. "Yeri Villa" has a wonderfully laid back, sun drenched feel with some truly beautiful vocal refrains, and finally - only available on the digital version - comes the deeply percussive and trance inducing "Darpeny", rounding off a rather stunning EP from this cross continental outfit. All tracks feature Ghanaian singer, song-writer, model and actor, Wiyaala. With a strong fanbase in Africa and beyond, "the lioness" made her mark on Wah Wah 45s and BBC 6 Music last year when she featured on the A-listed "Senye", described as "perfection" by Annie Mac and "pure joy!" by Tash LC.
First Word Records is very proud to welcome the return of the inimitable Kaidi Tatham, with his 5th album for us, entitled 'The Only Way'. Kaidi Tatham is a legendary multi-instrumentalist born in the Midlands and based in Belfast. Established as one of the original creators of the Broken Beat sound, he is a virtuoso on the keys and a true innovator in sound production. A deeply prolific artist, this is Kaidi's 5th solo album under his own name, following on from 'Don't Rush The Process' (2022), 'An Insight To All Minds' (2021), 'It's A World Before You' (2018), and 'In Search Of Hope' (re-pressed in 2020), all released on First Word, along with several EPs from 2017 onwards. 'The Only Way' is the latest chapter in Kaidi's entirely unique explorations into sound. 11 tracks touching on bruk, funk, jazz, mid-tempo hip hop and hyper-energetic Brazilian flavours, all thrown into a melting pot that's difficult to define, but all containing Kaidi's unmistakable sonic signature. The epic opener 'Reason We're Here' starts the album softly, before switching midway into KT's trademark synth-lead bruk boogie, to set the scene of what's to come. Lead track 'The Only Way' sees the return of Philly MC Uhmeer (Jazzy Jeff's son), his third collab with Kaidi and a timely celebratory track about this thing called Hip Hop, in its 50th year. 'Feels Like I'm On My Own' is a statement within itself, starting off as a jazz-funk jam, before switching to breakneck Brazilian choro, in the only way Kaidi can, with 'It's On' on a similar vein. 'Fricassee' is some heads down dancery business, and there are more guests with Trian Kayhatu appearing on 'Alien @$^%%' and Matt Lord on the super energetic album closer 'Not Suffering'. Kaidi Tatham continues to grow on his already impressive catalogue, a body of work that falls within the cracks of jazz and dance music, exemplifying modern British black brilliance; uncompromising, innovative, groundbreaking, intricately sophisticated and deeply funky. His fanbase expands on every release and it's no surprise that that fanbase includes a diverse set of peers such as Madlib ("ahead of his time"), Gilles Peterson ("a key part of an entire movement") and K15 ("a limitless source of inspiration") to name just a few of the many influenced by Kaidi's sound. 'The Only Way' is released on vinyl & digital worldwide via First Word Records, late July 2023.
