In 2013, she relocated to Berlin. In a city where everyone is an aspiring DJ, she put her own DJ career on pause to work as a teacher at Catalyst - Institute for Creative Arts & Technology. Having access to studios and musical equipment, she spent her weekends learning about synthesizers, samplers and sound design. In 2019, she established her label At Peace to release her first EPs. Since then, shes had acclaimed releases on labels such as Sloth Boogie, Razor n Tape, and of course Freerange, with a notable recent collaboration with label boss, Jimpster for their 300th release. She was also asked to remix New Zealands Fat Freddys Drop, Roach Motel (Defected/FAITH) and James Curd feat. Robert Owens. The EP opens up with the title track, Blue Skies, driven by a live bass, rolling high hats and piano hooks. The strings come in gradually to introduce the bluesy vocal sample. Darlin is next with its delicate shuffle jazz brush snares. Listen For A Heart Sound drives us home with a light jazzy rhythm section, live bass, plenty of guitar and Rhodes solo. On remix duty, we have the dynamic Dutch duo FOUK bringing their straight to the dancefloor remixing skills on Blue Skies. Our next adventure on Piston Recordings sees Rance & Maff return to the label with the fantastic Macreuse EP. This one follows their well-received Piston debut - Patrick EP that will no doubt garner a lot of attention. This is a fresh project by Seb Jesus who is based on Reunion Island in the Indian Ocean. He is quickly making waves across the techno, tech house, and deep house scenes. Seb is already a prominent figure under his J-Zeus alias, where hes pioneered a cutting-edge blend of Sega & Maloya Electro and founded the unique SegaPunk music style. This new venture has already seen releases on Record Union and Irreel Records, adding to his ever-growing discography. Hes also producing under his own label, Lakabane Recordings, a name were sure to hear more from in the near future. Macreuse gets us moving with a warm, soulful groove, driven by a groovy bassline and bright melodic phrases that lift the energy. They describe their music as Memories of the Future, the motto of their brand Nazca. As DJs, theyve performed at the worlds best clubs and festivals, bringing their unique sound across the globe, holding residencies from Ibiza to London, and creating countless underground hits. They are in top form once again with this latest journeying EP, where Los Suruba and their label Nazca return to vinyl releases, featuring two new remixers for this vinyl edition of the +33 EP. Innovative opener Dial Banger is a wonky house sound with wet claps and a gurgling bassline that gets ever more wild. Its a playful cut that teases and pleases in equal measure as the low-slung grooves, string stabs, and unhinged leads keep dancers locked. Elegancia La de Francia is a more experimental house affair with eerie synth leads and freaky filtered vocals, making a dark and menacing atmosphere. We start with 2 new unreleased versions based on the original. The Lazy Extended Vox, a longer more stripped down version of the original for the dance floor and the obligatory Lazy Dub. On remix duty, we brought in our good friend Rocco Rodamaal. He made the track shines with his trademark straight-to-the-point groove, taking the track in a new territory with none less than 5 mixes! MAW222 MAW LOST TAPES 18 Blue Moon During all the late-night Masters At Work studio sessions (in the 90s), many new creations came about, some were used, some were put on the side for future use, and some just sat on the 2-inch tapes for decades. This is one that MAW had in mind for a seasoned house singer but never came to fruition as a full song. These vibes were strictly groove-oriented but had melody already for words to be put on the notes played or at least some guidelines. This one is smooth and two simple chords develop the feeling with driving beats and big snares. Then, it breaks out into a four-chord melodic chorus-like section which gives you that lift. Feels like its inspired by one of my fav early 80s instrumental bands Hiroshima (if Hiroshima went house :), thats just a hunch. Who knows maybe we will get a song on it, but for now here you have the raw out-the-studio late-night instrumental vibes entitled Blue Moon. Fifth Time Out The keyapellas were a version that Masters At Work did in the early years where we would give you the track with no drums so you could work two records or versions while DJing. Fifth Time Out is a track we came up with ironically without drums, these days you can add your own drums a track like this. We thought why not let everyone hear a track we started without the beat who knows someone may just add a dope beat to it!! We will add one anyway Im sure while messing around in the studio. Akoko Ajeji means Strange Time in Yoruba. All the tracks on this album are in complex polymeter, meaning that they use multiple time signatures simultaneously. Each instrumental part is composed in a different meter, and consequently the instruments shift phase or slip relative to each other. For example, the bass could be in 4/4, the organ in 5/4, the hi-hat in 7/4, and so on. Loops of different lengths gradually diverge and converge, producing intricate but non-random patterns of interference that resemble improvisation. The albums themes are trance, music, and dancing, and its titles are in Yoruba because Yoruba has evocative words for these themes. Polymeter determines not only the rhythm, but the melody and harmony too, using techniques that are as radical as the pitch sets of atonal music were in the 1920s. Korda created a custom MIDI sequencer in order to make this album, and the result is a new approach to composition, and a new type of algorithmic music. Akoko Ajeji extends polymeter into new domains such as permutational harmony generation, and fuses algorithmic music with techno and jazz.
