A true master craftsman in an ever-changing musical environment, Gavin Griffin continues to thrive through his GMJ moniker. Returning to Meanwhile, he now showcases his "Unwalled / Sapience" EP. A forward-thinking progenitor of the deep progressive sound that epitomises his work, GMJ has seen his portfolio and influence grow in tandem with each other. An unrivalled talent, the Melbourne-based star's passion for "deep emotive electronic music" is matched by the dynamic rhythmic foundation and textured soundscapes within his ever-growing catalogue. Representing his own Meanwhile imprint, the GMJ sound has featured on more than half a century of production credits for the label he co-owns with fellow Australian, Matter, and the duo responsible for eight original EPs highlighting their combined talents. Solo material has been no less fruitful for the GMJ name as the Australian has racked up a trio of solo offerings including October 2020's Mood Medicine", July 2022's "Empty to Fill" and November 2024's poignant "Feel Inside / Living Memory". Now returning for his fourth outing, "Unwalled" is full of trademark GMJ production characteristics with its flowing and driving rhythmic poise. Redolent in flowing dancefloor credentials, a dynamic rhythm creates a deep groove while a looped motif delivers forward progression and silky-smooth sounds. Drenched in reverbs and delays, a smooth vocal line delivers subtle variation that comes to the fore at the breakdown before building to a magnificent zenith and dropping back into the deep hypnotic vibe of earlier phases. "Sapience" quickly finds its feet with hefty kick and ticking off-beat hats further ignited by a huge, filtered bassline groove that creates head-shaking, club-friendly verve, expertly syncopated to the revolving rhythm.
