Sector 7 Sounds' next release comes from elusive Sheffield-based producer Commodo, who makes his debut solo appearance on the Bristol label on April 2, releasing a new 12" titled Scabz / Guah The release follows a pair of shadowy 2020 EPs – Loan Shark and Stakeout – for Bristol imprint Black Acre, as well as past releases on esteemed UK labels such as Bandulu and Deep Medi. The latter of which he stepped out on in December 2020 with his Procession EP. Commodo's forthcoming 12" acts as his debut release proper on Sector 7 Sounds, following a 2015 remix of Hi5ghost's Nook Shot. Commodo's the kind of producer so sonically distinct that his sound is instantly recognisable, no matter how or where he's presenting it. On his latest, he draws from a familiar palette – think stomach-lurching tension fused with inventive sampling and cinematic stylings – but, as ever, he refuses to rely on formulaic methods or overly headsy concepts. The two tracks featured on the new record – Scabz and Guah – are products of casual experimentation, with Commodo seeking out ways to work with 2-step drum patterns that don't result in UKG-leaning sounds. Both tracks showcase just that in very different ways. As with any release tucked away into his catalogue, his debut for Sector 7 Sounds highlights Commodo's proven versatility, something fans of the quiet, yet consistent, beatmaker have long admired alongside his general low-end mastery. The release opens with Scabz. Here, Commodo takes cues from the likes of early-era Objekt as he leads you down a murky and meandering road that's lit with enough charm and slinkiness to ensure that you make it to the end unscathed. On the flip, Guah leans into boisterous, slightly trappier territory; a vigorous bounce, stemming from a 2-step snare balanced skilfully upon a trap-indebted kick pattern, felt on impact.
