Lazy Days is delighted to welcome New Zealander, Berlin based producer Philippa to the family. A breath of fresh air in the current musical landscape, her sudden rise on the scene in the last few years might make you think shes a newcomer, but her story tells otherwise. Going back to the late 90s in Auckland New Zealand, she held many residencies, opening up for international acts such as Derrick Carter, Carl Craig, François K, and even a certain Fred Everything! Her early influences included Chicago House and the early french touch sound of Motorbass. She was also working at BPM Record Store and a host/dj on national radio (George FM). In 2013, she relocated to Berlin. In a city where everyone is an aspiring DJ, she put her own DJ career on pause to work as a teacher at Catalyst - Institute for Creative Arts & Technology. Having access to studios and musical equipment, she spent her weekends learning about synthesizers, samplers and sound design. In 2019, she established her label At Peace to release her first EPs. Since then, shes had acclaimed releases on labels such as Sloth Boogie, Razor n Tape, and of course Freerange, with a notable recent collaboration with label boss, Jimpster for their 300th release. She was also asked to remix New Zealands Fat Freddys Drop, Roach Motel (Defected/FAITH) and James Curd feat. Robert Owens. The EP opens up with the title track, Blue Skies, driven by a live bass, rolling high hats and piano hooks. The strings come in gradually to introduce the bluesy vocal sample. Darlin is next with its delicate shuffle jazz brush snares. Listen For A Heart Sound drives us home with a light jazzy rhythm section, live bass, plenty of guitar and Rhodes solo. On remix duty, we have the dynamic Dutch duo FOUK bringing their straight to the dancefloor remixing skills on Blue Skies. Known for their live sounding funk driven sound, they released on Dam Swindles Heist Recordings, Shall Not Fade, Razor-N-Tape, and their own OUTPLAY.
The second single from Fred Everythings album Love, Care, Kindness & Hope features UK singer/songwriter James Alexander Bright. The original connection came from a Groove Armada song that Fred remixed (Talk Talk) which featured James on vocals. James is known for his work on K7! and more recently with a new album On Athens Of The North. Breathe was built around a shuffly broken beat, a driving bass line and deep chords. The track also features Wayne Tennant on back vocals and Pete Whitfield on Strings. The original was championed by Colleen Cosmo Murphy on her Balearic Breakfast show as well as supported by Black Coffee, Jazzanova, Peter Kruder, Rainer Trueby. We start with 2 new unreleased versions based on the original. The Lazy Extended Vox, a longer more stripped down version of the original for the dance floor and the obligatory Lazy Dub. On remix duty, we brought in our good friend Rocco Rodamaal. He made the track shines with his trademark straight-to-the-point groove, taking the track in a new territory with none less than 5 mixes! On top of running his own Memories label out of Lyon, hes been busy with original music for Laurent Garniers QR label as well as new remixes for Louie Vega coming soon.
After the Osunlade and Waajeed Remixes released last month, heres a set of brand new versions of Never by Fred Everything featuring the great vocals of Robert Owens. Moving away from the broken and jazzy approach of the original, these new mixes get into a rawer territory in a warehouse meets italo dream house vibe. Original available on the album Love, Care, Kindness & Hope
