Artist: The Black Warhols Title: Famous For Fifteen Minutes Label: Pure Sonik Records Series #: PURE41 Music Type: Trip-Hop, Dub, Shoegaze, Electronic Format: Digital, limited vinyl later in 2026 Mastering: Paul Mac THE BLACK WARHOLS is the long-awaited project from Detroit-born, Berlin-based creative polymath, former Underground Resistance member, and Spirit of Detroit Award recipient for exceptional artistic achievement Alan Oldham aka DJ T-1000. But this isnt techno. At all. Inspired by Oldhams longtime immersion into Berlins legendary art and music scenes, THE BLACK WARHOLS is a weird mix of dubbed-out, trip-hop beats, shoegaze textures, a bit of industrial, and a smattering of Suicide/DAF-style electro-punk. A slowed-down, trip-hop cover version of Rock On, a glam rock anthem originally released by David Essex in 1975, is even on the sonic menu. THE BLACK WARHOLS is an entirely different musical personality than the usual DJ T-1000 techno tracks; as evidenced by the silver wig and 60s leather jacket he dons under this guise! People Understand is the atmospheric intro. Like the song teases, Alans got something incredible up his sleeve. Rock On is an unlikely trip-hop/dub cover of the glitter rock classic from 1975. It features Oldham on all vocals (!), as well as production. Inspired by the kings of trip-hop, Massive Attack. We Are Dead Stars was the very first track completed, heavily influenced by the British ambient/electronic shoegaze band Seefeel, as well as American electronic minimal wave Goth band Tropic of Cancer. Choke is upbeat electronic punk rock squarely in the Suicide/DAF vein. For the video (directed by Zee Marla Osh), Oldham put together a couple of Berlin friends (Justin Deaktivere and Maedon) to make a fake live band. Screengazer features the cut-up vocals of Lee Margot of NNHMN. Deeply atmospheric with elements of trip-hop and shoegaze. When In Doubt, Wear Black was humorously inspired by the viral meme of bats with the camera turned upside down so it looked like a Goth club. Oldham wanted to make his own Goth soundtrack to that meme. Did it work? You be the judge! The moody, instrumental closer Hexagonal flexes Oldhams experimental side, drawing inspiration from old Warp Records favorites Seefeel (again) and Autechre. THE BLACK WARHOLS is a deep leftfield dive into Alan Oldhams non-techno influences, and we hope you enjoy it. --30--
