'w/u' is a dance track built on rhythms that run close to future garage and post-dubstep. Finely chopped beats underneath, a floating, weightless image sitting on top. Irregular breakbeats, deep spatial treatment, grainy texture. The elements casting shadow across the track keep stacking up, and the melody and hooks stay catchy the whole way through. The vocal fragments that surface at key points are something that recurs throughout Daijo Kaisei's work. The voice isn't there to carry meaning. It's handled as part of the rhythm and melody, which is how the hook ends up fused to the beat. Roughness and shadow, and a pop sensibility that moves the body, sitting in the same track. 'I started 'w/u' from the idea of keeping a lift inside slightly grainy sound. I think noise, distortion and broken rhythms carry a sense of time that cleanly finished sound doesn't have. I built it on beats close to future garage and post-dubstep, layering more in as it heads into the second half, and made the peak at the end something that pushes the body forward on its own. The vocal chops work the same way. Less about what the words mean, more about the voice as a sound, placed as part of the rhythm and melody. Slightly damaged sound and a bright kind of euphoria. I wanted to leave the moment where both of those exist at once in this track.' - Daijo Kaisei
