Active Systems finds beauty in chaos, sensitivity in an overwhelming world, and wonderful strangeness in the familiar. A producer working in electronica, he draws from experimental grooves, stark electro, underground electronica, braindance, mystery and shadowy underground signals. His music sits between places: not quite easy listening, not quite dance, but uncertain music built from familiar tones, riffs and textures that unfold into alternate timelines and strange futures. As a young creator who grew up with infinite availability, part of coming into his own creative process was focusing in on what he loves, then finding a unique way with it. After absorbing a vast swathe of music, he fell hard in love with the experimental grooves and stark electro of the 90s and early 00s, including Underground Resistance, Boards of Canada, ziq and the deranged funky braindance of Aphex Twins Rephlex label. Released on his own Split Lip Records, The Red EP is a debut four- track release confident in its sound, and confident in its own uncertainty. Not a shadowy guise for an established artist, but the first signal from a producer drawn to the idea of electronic music as something mysterious, underground and half hidden from view. Proudly rooted in the dust, dirt and nostalgia of underground electronica, Detroit techno and weird core, the EP moves from familiar patterns into new stories and emotions. Active Systems says: I realised that if I dont like a track, the doubt is usually because its got my sound all over it Across Red EP, Gabbol carries a glacially grinding hip hop beat that may bring Boards of Canada to mind when it kicks in, before liquid melodies emerge and the track evolves into a grand, starlit melancholia of its own. Itsover moves through skippy rhythm and intersecting chimes, hums and buzzes. Avoid is described as b boys in a clock shop funk, while Maus suggests a furtive dash through a future citys graveyard. Each time, the elements keep modulating and multiplying around each other. What first appears straightforward becomes an unfamiliar and enticing new set of emotions.
