An artist with a powerful story to tell, Hrag Mikkel has been at the forefront of underground dance music since 2017. Now returning to Proton Music for a debut original EP, "Cosmic Bliss / Silver Night" continues that adventure. Born and raised in Lebanon under a raft of challenging circumstances, Hrag Mikkel's voice has resonated loudly through his inspiring sound and sonic mastery. A regular on the likes of Pipe & Pochet, Kindisch and Armen Miran's Hoomidaas, Hrag made a memorable mark on Proton Music with a glorious reworking of Nōpi's "Liquid Week" with fellow countryman Pambouk in April 2021. Now providing the label with two original tracks, "Cosmic Bliss" is a wonderfully imagined work that combines organic and synthesised melodies in sublime symbiosis. An effortless groove provides subtle urgency as glassy keys and counterpoint motifs collide gently against each other to create a palette of brilliant sonic colours. Rippling through a beatless break, melodic elements pick up the pace once more in the second half with poise and grace. "Silver Night" carries the same percussive liquidity as its counterpart with familiar elements continuing the narrative groove. Immaculately placed riffs cascade around each other in a delightful call and response as delayed synths and smooth keys create the perfect juxtaposition. Waxing and waning with ease, the various sonic elements create a typically rich aural tapestry that effortlessly showcases the Hrag Mikkel sound. Jamie Stevens has been creating standout dance music productions for over two decades, both as part of the award-winning Infusion band and in solo guise. A veteran of such esteemed imprints as Bedrock, Lost & Found, Selador and Sudbeat Music, the Australian has been a regular on Proton Music since late 2019 with a quartet of exquisite remixes. Reworking Rudy, Petar Dundov, Magitman, and James Monro (the latter in April 2023), Jamie returns to Proton Music with a fifth remix. Reimagining "Cosmic Bliss", a powerful rhythmic force immediately comes to the fore with superb jungle sounds reminiscent of Future Sound of London forming an atmospheric backdrop. Taking familiar motifs from the original, his skill is to rework them into an evocative 9-minute extravaganza that fires off in new directions, not least in a spine-tingling bass progression and meandering pads. Hitting its stride with a storming breakbeat pattern in the second half, the combination of melodic prowess and dancefloor force illustrates a supreme talent still at the top of his game. The final remix sees Pablo Maneiro make his Proton Music debut through his Mayro production soubriquet. Author of over 150 production credits, the Argentinean star quickly found his place through his effortless merging of genres which led to a 2018 debut on Renesanz. Since then, music signed to the likes of Mango Alley, Perspectives Digital and Miss Monique's Siona Records has seen Mayro making sizeable headlines supported but Eelke Kleijn, Armen Miran and Cid Inc. A clutch of releases on Particles was punctuated by the impressive "Crazy Thoughts" EP in mid-2022 as Mayro now makes his Proton Music debut. Reworking "Cosmic Bliss", a driving beat and ticking off-beat percussion provides a club-friendly framework from which familiar melodic phrases make their presence felt. Adding an array of additional production material in the shape of new motifs and shimmering effects, Hrag Mikkel's track is taken in a dramatic new direction, not least via a rasping, razor-edged bassline groove that powers the remix forwards. Pulsating waves of pads and stereo-panned effects add to the vibrancy in the second half to create a dynamic and visceral offering. Two original tracks plus stunning remixes from Jamie Stevens and Mayro find Hrag Mikkel in a state of sonic "Cosmic Bliss". Directed by Jay Epoch Mastered by Cid Inc. Argentinean duo, Alto Astral, have risen quickly to prominence in recent times with their mature production sound and ethereal vocal arrangements. Already regulars on such esteemed imprints as MNL, Or Two Strangers and Nick Warren's The Soundgarden, the Barcelona-based pair return with their own very special project in the shape of "Heartbeat Collective". First conceived at Amsterdam Dance Event 2023 after discussions with the Proton Music team, Alto Astral have meticulously curated a compilation of the highest order featuring both Argentinean and Greek artists and a pair of original tracks from the duo themselves. The result is a spectacular extravaganza showcasing a quintet of modern progressive house music encapsulating a magical musical narrative. As Alto Astral's Martina expounds, "themes surrounding love, unity and empathy" are all present, but juxtaposed against the "powerful, strong and even slightly furious energy of the current world." "I Am" is a beautiful opener that drifts easily through its combination of ethereal drone and smooth breakbeat rhythm. A cavernous sub-bassline adds depth aplenty while a wonderfully catchy vocal hook floats elegantly across the piece with vocal harmonies creating a majestic sense of open space and sublime emotion. "You & Us" continues the smooth melodic narrative while a chest-thumping 4/4 kick beats out a metronomic anchor. Pads and twinkling arpeggios create delicate melodic interplay as they rise and fall throughout, and a swirling breakdown introduces a loquacious vocal. The second half introduces a new rhythmic urgency and a huge bassline groove to proceedings with dynamic effect. Label regular, Juan Deminicis, has thrilled Proton Music with a slew of original and remix material and it is an honour to see him represented on "Heartbeat Collective" with the typically mature and deeply flowing "Astral Odyssey". Replete with rhythmic poise and grace, thickly textured pads vie with a delayed arp and lead motif. A beautiful vocal harmony lilts easily as it echoes across the beatless mid-point before the pace is picked up once more in the second half where vocal layers and counterpoint melody join forces to close out the third movement. Greek legend and long-time Proton Music friend, Simos Tagias, joins the collective party with "Missile". Redolent in typically impressive club-friendly credentials, a rolling, head-shaking groove swings across the 7-minute track with dynamic drive as immaculately cadenced synth notes add sonic intrigue and seething dancefloor vitality. Reaching a rousing crescendo where all melodic components join forces to a compelling zenith, "Missile" drops back to its delicious ever-present groove in the final stages. Newcomer, Andrés Moris is the final beating heart of the Alto Astral collective as the Córdoba resident builds on success found for the likes of Sudbeat Music, Mango Alley and Juicebox Music. Contributing to the release courtesy of "Connected", Andrés' skill is to create a cone-melting bassline sequence that fills the low-end in imposing fashion. Shimmering synth lines then ripple atop, delicately swimming across the stereo spectrum with a hint of steel drum resonance. A garrulous spoken vocal phrase delivers a meditational air at the mid-point and into the third movement, while the melodic phrasing of earlier movements flow towards the track's conclusion in combination with the devastating bassline pattern. Five pieces of masterful production from a quartet of progressive house's finest exponents see Alto Astral truly part of a life-affirming "Heartbeat Collective". An artist with over 10 years experience in the world of electronic music, Paul Deep has been a stalwart of the progressive house scene. A regular on the likes of Clubsonica, Sound Avenue and Hernan Cattaneo's Sudbeat Music, supported by Guy J, Nick Warren and Lee Burridge, the Argentinean artist hit the Proton Music headlines in September 2022 with his beautifully developed "Orchid" EP. Now returning to the label with another original offering, "Odyssey" is a typically deep and contemplative affair with a cavernous sub-bass groove sitting below a rippling percussive stream. Wending its way across an 8-minute journey, myriad textures and effects pave the way for a subtle melodic motif to evolve easily, complemented by a beautiful piano and keys sequence at the breakdown redolent in evocative splendour. Returning to the deep rhythmic roots of earlier phases in the second half, "Odyssey" is another majestic Paul Deep musical sculpture. An artist requiring no introduction to the Proton Music faithful with such memorable releases as "Little Friend", "River Pond" and "Station", Dmitry Molosh is an artist who has continued to ride the crest of a production wave for over 15-years and some 650 credits. Consequently, the Belarusian has seen his music feature on some of underground dance's most esteemed labels including Replug, Sudbeat, Plattenbank and his own Proportion. Now returning to remix on Proton for the first time since 2020, the Dmitry Molosh interpretation is a spellbinding affair that continues the strong rhythmic flair of "Odyssey" before developing a new bassline groove and melodic counterpoint. Further extending the themes laid out in Paul Deep's original, Dmitry's skill is to create a scintillating progressive gem that sparkles at a sunlit breakdown with evocative melodic passion. Dropping back into the generous percussive backdrop in the second half, the Dmitry Molosh remix is a joy to behold. A second remix sees, Zankee Gulati return to the Proton fold. A regular on Particles, not least through his 2018 "Breathe" EP, the Sydney-based star has found himself at the forefront of the modern progressive house scene with a string of releases on a host of elite labels that include the likes of Nick Warren's The Soundgarden, John Digweed's Bedrock and GMJ & Matter's Meanwhile / Meanwhile Horizons. Indeed, it was at the annual Amsterdam Dance Event festival in October 2023 that saw the Australian perform at the duo's sold-out Meanwhile showcase. As comfortable standing behind the decks as he is sitting in the studio, a single remix of Rick Pier O'Neil's "Imperial" in late 2022 is now joined by a second as Zankee Gulati transforms "Odyssey" into a broody rhythmic gem. Developing easily over its duration, echoes of the original float through its 8-minutes with familiar melodic refrains and atmospheric pads. Full of additional production material, complex textures, white-noise effect and muted arpeggio, they combine to create a deliciously rich and full-flavoured sound that resonates fully in the second half. Creating a magical "Odyssey", Paul Deep is taken on a voyage of discovery with additional remixes from Dmitry Molosh and Zankee Gulati. Directed by Jay Epoch Mastered by Cid Inc. A prolific and talented artist of equal measure, Michael A returns to Proton Music with the fifth instalment of his acclaimed "Fantasy" series. Opener "Third Down" evokes atmosphere aplenty with its deep and dark vibes as hypnotic and muted arps build easily among white-noise washes and spoken samples. A crystalline synth motif adds an air of unease while a head-shaking bassline groove supplies dancefloor character. The arpeggiated narrative is continued through the aptly titled "Modulator" as a chunky rhythmic framework keeps the energy high. An array of delay-soaked effects create depth while an immaculately cadenced pluck sequence provides dynamism post-breakdown alongside a floating and glassy-sounding melody. "Shine a Light" immediately impresses with its intricate percussive top-line of shakers and hi-toms, while a hypnotic melody plays across the early phrases. A rasping bassline adds depth as multi-faceted layers of complementary melodies coruscate over each other with richly textured pads affording atmosphere aplenty. The final track sees "Passion" entice with its powerful bassline gravitas and low-end energy. Steam-powered white-noise washes gently pulsate in time with the hefty kick and muted glissando synth before a more rounded and flowing melodic pattern sits easily within the rhythmic and bassline components throughout the second half. A regular fixture in the upper echelons of the progressive house artist charts, Alex O'Rion is a name synonymous with a raft of high-profile releases over more than 15 years and a distinguished production career. Black Hole, Sudbeat Music, Lost & Found and his own Solis Records have thus all played host to his imperious sound. Remixes for Desaturate and Somersault were Particles highlights in 2015 and 2017 while a remix of Juan Deminicis' "Sounds of Freedom" was a moment of magic on Proton Music in early 2021. Now returning, the Alex O'Rion remix of "Spring Singing" is a typically potent dancefloor offering that bathes elements of Michael A's original in a new light while creating beautifully sculpted original melodies with their themes rooted in the "Vol. 3" opener. Full of fluctuating and atmospheric beauty, the track develops elegantly over its near 8-minte duration to stunning effect. From the central Argentine province of Santa Fe, Rosario resident Julieta Kühnle is famed for her silky DJ skills and peerless production credentials. A regular across her homeland in Côrdoba, Buenos Aires, and Mendoza, a production career in tandem has seen music signed to Clubsonica Records, Mango Alley and Armen Miren's Hoomidaas to name but a few. Making her Proton Music debut, the Julieta Kühnle remix of the series title track is a powerful reminder of her skill and craftsmanship as carefully sculpted beats sit perfectly across "Fantasy" and familiar refrains float in unexpected new patterns and phrasing to create a wonderful new interpretation. Evolving over its phrases, new analogue motifs and additional production material blend effortlessly with original components to create a magical club-friendly remix that is certain to find favour with the progressive house fraternity.
