Muchacho Kinn Timo introduces The Busi Mhlongo and Madala Kunene Remixes for 2024, a project by M2KR (MELT2000 Revisited) that pays tribute to iconic South African artists. This release showcases Muchacho Kinn Timo reimagining classic tracks by Busi Mhlongo and Madala Kunene using elements of the Amapiano genre. Both artists are revered for their significant contributions to South African music, and their works have been reinterpreted with a blend of traditional African rhythms, electronic music textures, and contemporary Amapiano sounds. The album includes three remixes of Busi Mhlongos songs and two remixes of Madala Kunenes tracks, merging African musical styles with Amapianos characteristic jazzy licks and rhythmic grooves. Muchacho Kinn Timo shared his thoughts on the project, stating, It was crucial to me that the remixes maintain the original feel of the music while also introducing a modern twist for listeners. I aimed to select songs that reflect everyday life and address common issues, creating a cohesive musical journey. In Konko Man, for example, Madala Kunene poses questions like Where is my maize meal? and Where is my egg?—everyday items such as maize meal for making Pap, a staple dish in South African homes. Konko Man by Madala Kunene: This remix blends East Asian textures, jazz guitar licks, soulful chords, and energetic African rhythms driven by a punchy log drum bass—a staple in the Amapiano genre. The vocals evoke Madalas classic style, featuring a catchy melody with memorable call-and-response elements. In Konko Man, I aimed to create a new folk-inspired atmosphere by incorporating traditional instruments not typically found in African music, adding depth to the song. The introduction of the Dotara helped infuse a world music vibe, making it the perfect opening track, adds Muchacho Kinn Timo. Umoya (Originally Yehlisani Umoya) by Busi Mhlongo: With Umoya, I aimed to preserve as many of the original Maskandi elements as possible while infusing a unique Amapiano flavour, comments Muchacho Kinn Timo. The original Yehlisani Umoya is a genuine Maskandi classic, brimming with energy and emotion, and I wanted to capture that essence in the new version, he adds. Umoya is an exhilarating fusion of explosive Maskandi vocals and guitar samples, soulful house elements, and electronic music textures, complemented by classical music motifs. The song is propelled by a robust bassline, staying true to the signature Amapiano style. Imali (Originally Yaphelimali Yami) by Busi Mhlongo: Carried by Busi Mhlongos authoritative vocals, which are strong and unique, and driven by a syncopated rhythm reminiscent of the two-step, Imali is a classic that seamlessly combines African percussive elements and Afrobeat rhythms with two-step dance music. Supported by Afro-jazz guitar licks and deeply moving chords, the song further fuses elements of Trap music with a heavy 808 bassline. Imali is an emotional love song that carries a lot of depth in the vocals, so I wanted the vocals to be the driving force of this version while exploring the combination of different rhythms and sonic textures, commented Muchacho Kinn Timo. Ziyakhala (Originally Ikhalaphi) by Madala Kunene: Ziyakhala is a blend of Afro house rhythms and traditional Maskandi melodies, ignited by the legendary Madala Kunenes unmistakable vocals. Accompanied by the velvety tones of a saxophone, his performance infuses the track with authenticity and emotion. Anchoring this reimagined rendition is a powerful log drum bass, propelling the song forward with unwavering energy. Supported by punchy synths and velvety chords intertwining seamlessly, they craft an irresistible groove. Meanwhile, reverberated vocal samples drift in and out, casting an aura of mystery and intrigue over the mix. On Ziyakhala, I wanted to push the boundaries and explore a fresh sonic landscape while maintaining reverence for the original song, Yintoni Na (Originally Yise Wabantwana Bami): From heavy-hitting 808 bass lines to punchy log drum beats, complemented by assertive snares, soul-stirring African vocals, and ethereal pads, this rendition is a vibrant transformation of a classic Maskandi love song into an electrifying Amapiano anthem. While the original song carries a sad tone, this version is full of energy and vitality, symbolising our resilience as a people to find joy amidst adversity. Its a beautiful contrast—a celebration of lifes highs and lows, commented Muchacho Kinn Timo. The Busi Mhlongo and Madala Kunene Remixes for 2024 revisits the cultural heritage and musical impact of Mhlongo and Kunene while presenting their work to a new audience, emphasising the unifying and inspirational power of music. The project invites global audiences, offering both newcomers and longtime fans a contemporary interpretation of these legendary artists music. Durban June 2024
